Alcoholism and Recovery

Author: nodrugs | Filed under: Health, Treatment

Alcoholism is a destructive and debilitating disease. Fortunately, alcohol recovery is possible. One of the truisms about alcohol dependency is that the alcoholic has to want to quit drinking in order to attain sobriety. For many reasons, this is a complicated and complex issue. As alcoholics progress through the alcoholism stages, they often engage in behavior that is typified by increasing manipulation, lying, and denial.

Added to this is the fact that many, if not most alcoholics experience diminishing rational and reasoning skills as their disease progresses. Indeed, if this were possible, it would be difficult for alcoholics who possess excellent thinking abilities and who are devoid of physical and mental health issues to have the will or motivation to quit drinking. This is because alcoholism, to a great extent, takes control over a person. And to add to the situation, it is extremely difficult to quit drinking for alcoholics because of the alcohol withdrawal symptoms they will go through if they abruptly stop drinking.

So in many respects, alcoholism and recovery is a combination of words that do not naturally “fit.” The good news, however, is that alcohol addiction recovery is possible. Indeed, via professional alcohol treatment, many alcohol dependent individuals have totally stopped drinking and have attained lasting sobriety.
